Helping with the FRAME 14 exhibition was a really great
experience. I was definitely good
practice for when we will be organizing our show. I had no idea how much there
is to think about when getting the exhibition ready.

By the time I got there the photographs
have been put up but it took 12 people and about 6 hours to do that. One of the
tasks I was involved was getting the nametags ready and placing them next the
right image. Sam and I tried to do it as quickly and efficient as possible but
still it took us over an hour to do it. That made me think that we really have
to have a good plan for out exhibition and organized duties in advance just to
make sure we will not run out of time.
Apart from hanging the work up we needed to make sure the
room is ready too. That involved hanging the black fabric to cover less
attractive and unused parts of the gallery space. We needed to organized
furniture and sweep the floor. The next day was mainly setting everything up
for the conference and trade show that was happening before the
exhibition.
Taking
under consideration how much FRAME did to promote the exhibition, trade show
and the conferences and how much and how many sponsors they had there was not
many people there. It was quite disappointing and a bit awkward as most of
people there were personally involved in the show. There was not many “outside”
public there. I guess it might be caused by lack of atmosphere. The place was
extremely cold, the “buffet” was very disappointing and what was more important
there was not any music to create the mood.
As well there was no “sneak-peaks” to tease people and get them
interested. I guess people did not know what this exhibition is about and maybe
that is why they just ignored it.
During this two day that I was there I kept thinking how our
exhibition will be like and if there is anything that I can absorb and use it
later while getting ready for our show. I have made a little list of think that
I think we should consider.
Overall it was really great and useful experience. I think
most important was that I had a chance to meet new people, people who do
photography on daily basis and are willing to help new comers. Thanks to the
conferences they organised I find out that there is a lot different photography
societies and activates in Birmingham that I could get involve to build up my
contacts and got the help I need to evolve as a professional.
